There are people who think the cult supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer should not be disturbed with revivals and reboots, as many shows do these days. Fox boss Gary Newman isn’t one of them. Speaking at INTV Conference in Jerusalem, Newman expressed his desire to bring back Buffy the Vampire Slayer to TV, while also acknowledging that the revival won’t happen without the series creator, Joss Whedon.

“I think if you look in our library, ‘Buffy’ is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back,” Newman said. “It’s something we talk about frequently, and Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it. And until Joss decides it’s time, it won’t happen.”

Fox isn’t a stranger to reviving its old shows since the network successfully did revivals for The X-Files, 24 and Prison Break. Still, Newman claims that the network isn’t the one initiating those projects, but the creators of the shows.

“Most times when we brought things back, it started with the creator coming to us and saying I’ve got another story I want to tell,” he said. “It seems to me that if there isn’t a real sense of nostalgia, a passionate fan base demonstrating they still want it then I don’t really buy bringing these shows back.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 on The WB and revolved around a young high-school cheerleader Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who discovers she has skills to fight vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. The show received a widespread critical acclaim during its original run and is now regarded as one of the greatest TV shows of all times.
