Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones landed the role of Morticia Addams in the Addams Family-based Netflix’s television series Wednesday. Zeta-Jones joins a cast that already includes Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, the patriarch of the Addams family.

The news was recently confirmed by Netflix on streamer’s official social media.

Wednesday will be directed and executive produced by iconic director Tim Burton. The series, which will have eight episodes, focuses on Wednesday Addams and chronicles her years as a student at Nevermore Academy. It will follow Wednesday as she “attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore.”

The quirky Addams family originates from The New Yorker cartoons created by Charles Addams in 1938. His works later served as a basis for a movie and television franchise that spanned several live-action and animated projects.

The most famous works featuring the Addams family are a pair of 1990s movies directed by Barry Sonnenfeld. The 1991’s The Addams Family was a big commercial success, while its 1993’s sequel Addams Family Values received an Academy Award nomination and was considered one of the best movies of the year by critics.
