Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions will join HBO to co-produce a series, based on the massive PlayStation franchise The Last of Us.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the series will be produced by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, who will work with the writer and creative director of the game, Neil Druckmann. Druckmann will help write the series and he will serve as an executive producer.

The Last of Us follows the relationship between a smuggler named Joel and a Teenager named Ellie in a post-apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by a pandemic. The 2013 Sony and Naughty Dog’s game was a critically acclaimed success with an engrossing plot.

“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,” Mazin said. “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.” Mazin is known to be an avid player of the game.

This is Mazin’s first TV project since Chernobyl. The limited series garnered praise for its depiction of the aftermath of the nuclear disaster in the Soviet Union in 1986. It won two Golden Globes and 10 Emmy awards.
