The press tour for the last year’s thriller Don’t Worry Darling gave us many wild moments, including the so-called “spitgate” between Chris Pine and Harry Styles. Pine finally cleared the air and revealed what really happened between him and Styles during that viral moment at the Venice Film Festival.

All hell broke loose following the Don’t Worry Darling screening in Venice after a viral video apparently showed Harry Styles spitting on Chris Pine. The blink-and-you-miss-it moment led to countless tabloid headlines and think pieces, and Pine even had to craft a statement saying that Styles didn’t spit on him and called him a “very, very kind guy.”

Many months later, the story didn’t quite die down, and Pine decided to clear the air during a recent interview with Esquire. The Star Trek actor revealed that the Grammy-winning singer simply leaned down and said, “It’s just words, isn’t it?”, referencing an inner joke between them.

“We had this little joke, because we’re all jetlagged, we’re all trying to answer these questions, and sometimes when you’re doing these press things, your brain goes all befuddled, you know, you start speaking gibberish, and we had a joke like, ‘It’s just words, man,’” explained Pine.

The drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling is now long behind Pine, and he’s focusing on other projects. He’s currently busy promoting Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and he’ll make his directorial debut with Poolman later this year.
