If Gemma Chan’s character Astrid Young was your favorite part of Crazy Rich Asians, we’ve got some good news for you! Warner Bros. is currently in the early stages of developing a spinoff movie that focuses on Astrid and her first love Charlie Wu.

According to Deadline, the studio started working on this project after being wowed by Jason Kim’s “dynamite pitch for the lovebirds’ story”. Kim is best known for his work on HBO crime comedy Barry, which earned him one Emmy nomination.

In Kevin Kwan’s books that inspired the original Crazy Rich Asians movie, Charlie Wu was introduced as Astrid’s first love, but they never got to live their happily ever after. Their engagement fell apart after Astrid’s parents broke them up because they felt he wasn’t a suitable husband for their daughter.

This project shouldn’t be confused with the Crazy Rich Asians sequel that’s been greenlit shortly after the first movie became a box office sensation. In addition to Chan, the original movie also starred Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh. It went on to become the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s. Work on sequels was halted after screenwriter Adele Lim exited the project until Amy Wang agreed to replace her back in March.
