Damian Lewis gave us one of the most memorable performances of his career as Bobby Axelrod on Billions, but all good things must come to an end. The Emmy-winning actor announced he won’t be back when this show returns for its sixth season on Showtime.

Lewis discussed his departure in a recent interview with The New York Times and said that “Axe has been vanquished”. The actor explained he’s ready to move on from playing this character, adding it’s “difficult to keep mining, creatively” because we know who he is.

Brian Koppelman, who serves as showrunner of Billions along with David Levien, praised Lewis’ ability to make a despicable character likably as he reflected on his time on the show.

“Damian Lewis is not an actor who’s scared the audience is going to dislike him. He is willing to play the character in as caustic a manner as the character requires, and he has faith that if he’s true to that, it will connect with the audience,” Koppelman told The New York Times.

Billions was renewed for Season 6 last October, but its production was delayed due to pandemic-related production shutdown. Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll, and Maggie Siff are all set to come back when the series returns to Showtime on January 23rd, 2022.
