The latest installment of Marvel’s X-Men franchise failed to rise from the ashes.
The only title Dark Phoenix earned this weekend is the title of the installment with lowest opening in the 19-year franchise. The previous title holder was 2013’s The Wolverine.
The film opened to an estimated $33 million during an overall low-earning nationwide box office.
The animated The Secret Life of Pets 2 collected $47.1 million, which gave it the number one spot.
Dark Phoenix directed by Simon Kinberg and starring Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender, did do a bit better at the international box office with $107 million. There it beat the pet-centered pic that earned $16 million globally.
Box office holdovers Disney’s live-action Aladdin banked another $67.6 million worldwide brining its total to $604 million. It is followed by Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which amassed $292 million globally. Rounding out the top five is Paramount’s Rocketman, which grosses a total of $51 million.
