Jurnee Smollett was one of the shining stars of the stand-alone Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey, and she’ll be following in Margot Robbie’s footsteps. DC Film is currently plotting a stand-alone movie that centers on Black Canary, with Smollett in the titular role.

Black Canary was one of the classic DC characters to appear in Birds of Prey, along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress and Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain. The rumors of several potential spin-offs have been flying around ever since this film came out, but Black Canary is the first to officially get the green light.

Fans were calling for Black Canary’s return long before DC announced this spin-off, and Smollett said it’s great to see how passionate they are about the character while chatting with ET at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

“I think it’s just so amazing! To see the fans be so passionate and to see them accept the character and root for the character—I love Black Canary, I love Dinah Lance, it’s such an honor to play her. It means so much to me,” said Smollett.

Black Canary will reunite Smollett with the Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green, who’s in charge of writing the script, but plot details are being kept under wraps.
