A phone call during Don Cheadle’s daughter’s birthday party changed his life.

The Avengers: Endgame actor has been playing the role of James Rhodes aka War Machine since Iron Man 2 in 2010, but the role wasn’t always his.

Cheadle only joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Terrence Howard told producers he could not return to the role which he originated in the first Iron Man.

During an interview on the podcast The Big Ticket, Cheadle revealed that he only had an hour to decide if he wanted to take over when phoned by producer Kevin Feige and star Robert Downey Jr.

“‘You just gotta take a leap of faith,’” Cheadle remembered them saying. “But that’s, like, ten years. That could be twelve years that we’re talking about,” said Cheadle. “I said, ‘Well, I’m at my daughter’s birthday party.’ They said, ‘Oh, take two hours.’”

Looks like he made the right decision!
