A sequel to the Downton Abbey film, which is a spinoff of the television series, with the original cast is in the works.

Production for the sequel started last week and it’s set to be released on December 22, 2021.

Co-producing the film are Focus Features and Gareth Neame’s Carnival Films. Joining the original cast which includes Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Imelda Staunton, and Maggie Smith are Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), Laura Haddock (Guardians of the Galaxy), Nathalie Baye (Catch Me If You Can), and Dominic West (The Wire).

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes will write the film’s screenplay with Emmy and BAFTA Award winner Neame and Emmy Award winner Liz Trubridge, producing alongside him. Directing is Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn).

The first film followed the King and Queen of England visiting the Crawley family and Downton staff and it ended with a Royal Family ball.

“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be reunited with the much beloved characters of Downton Abbey,” Neame said.
