One of Duane Allman’s guitars has just been sold at auction for a whopping $1million.

Allman played the 1957 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop on the first two Allman Brothers records. It is best known for being played in the recording “Layla” with Derek and the Dominoes. It was also among the last times Allman played that guitar.

The guitar was purchased by now-former owner back in 1977, a few years after Allman’s death in 1971. It was in rough condition, but the buyer repaired and restored it over time. It has been on display at the Allman Brothers’ Big House museum in Macon, Georgia.

“I don’t think anybody expected that,” Museum Director Richard Brent said of the amount. “The history of it is what sold it.”

Lucky for fans, the anonymous buyer has agreed to share the instrument with the museum and the guitar will be back in the Big House collection for a few months a year. “It will be coming back to the Big House in late November. We couldn’t ask for more than that.”
