The much-anticipated return of Christopher Meloni to the Law & Order franchise has cast a lead to star opposite him.

Dylan McDermott has signed on for the upcoming NBC drama Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Meloni will reprise his role of Eliot Stabler in the series, returning to the NYPD to battle organized crime after a personal loss. To rebuild his life, he will establish an elite task force to take down the city’s most powerful criminals.

As of now, the details of McDermott’s character are under wraps, but he’ll be a series regular.

McDermott’s previous TV roles include American Horror Story, Hollywood, The Politician, and The Practice, in which he earned an Emmy nomination and three Golden Globe nods, winning one for the latter. He also earned a second Emmy nod for Hollywood.

The series is created by Dick Wolf, who will be executive producing with Ilene Chaiken, Terry Miller, Fred Berner, Arthur W. Forney, and Peter Jankowski.

This marks Meloni’s return to the Law & Order universe. The actor left Law & Order: SVU during the show’s 12th season in 2011. Season 13 wrote in that Stabler retired from the police force.
