Ed Sheeran is busy teasing his upcoming studio album Subtract, and he gave us a taste of things to come with the lead single “Eyes Closed”. The music video for this song takes the singer on an emotional roller coaster and sees him coming face to face with grief.

The Mia Barnes-directed visual opens with a shot of a car sinking into the sea, before showing Sheeran going to a bar. There, he encounters a big blue monster, that seemingly represents grief. The monster follows him everywhere he goes, and he quickly realizes everyone around him has a grief monster of their own.

Like the rest of Sheeran’s new album, “Eyes Closed” is inspired by some of the most heartbreaking moments he experienced in recent years, including the tragic passing of one of his closest friends Jamal Edwards.

“This song is about losing someone, feeling like every time you go out and you expect to just bump into them, and everything just reminds you of them and the things you did together,” said Sheeran in a press release.

“Eyes Closed” was released as the lead single from Sheeran’s upcoming album (Subtract). The standard edition of this record will feature a total of 14 tracks, and it will be released on May 5.
