We’ve seen everyone from Peter Sellers to Steve Martin portray Inspector Clouseau over the years, and another famous comedian is getting ready to follow in their footsteps. Eddie Murphy is eying the lead role in the upcoming Pink Panther movie at MGM.

This project is still in the early stages of development, with Chris Bremner writing the script and Jeff Fowler (Sonic the Hedgehog) on board to direct. Dan Lin, Julie Andrews, Larry Mirisch, and Jonathan Eirich will be in charge of directing the project, which hails from the Amazon-owned MGM.

Murphy’s casting is yet to be officially announced, but the role of Inspector Clouseau is the natural fit for the Oscar-nominated actor. The SNL veteran has an impressive repertoire in the world of comedy and he long admired Peter Sellers’ comedic performances.

Murphy experienced somewhat of a career resurgence in recent years, after receiving critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nod for his 2019 film Dolemite Is My Name. He went on to star in the sequel of his hit movie Coming to America and appeared alongside Jonah Hill and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in You People this year. He’s attached to several more exciting projects, including Amazon’s holiday comedy Candy Cane Lane and Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.
