True crime dramas are all the rage these days and Love & Death is HBO Max’s latest addition to this popular genre. The first teaser trailer for this limited series is here and it sees Elizabeth Olsen explore her dark side in the role of an infamous axe murderer.

According to its official logline, Love & Death centers on two churchgoing couples enjoying small-town family life in Texas—until someone decides to pick up an axe. The series was inspired by the true story of Candy Montgomery, who was accused of an axe murder in 1980, before being acquitted.

Montgomery started having an affair with Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) after meeting his wife Betty Gore (Lily Rabe) at church. The confrontation between the two women eventually led to a brutal murder and Montgomery used a wood-splitting axe to strike Gore 41 times.

Love and Death will chronicle this headline-making case, which shook the public back in the ’80s. It was written by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies), with Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) serving as a director.

Love & Death will premiere on HBO Max on April 27 and it will also star Patrick Fugit, Keir Gilchrist, Elizabeth Marvel, Tom Pelphrey, and Krysten Ritter.
