Another Academy Awards ceremony is behind us, and it gave us a bunch of moments we’ll be discussing all week long. One of them was Eminem’s performance that took everyone by surprise and sent Facebook and Twitter into a collective frenzy.

Billboard reported that, according to data shared by Facebook, it was the top trending moment of the night on the social media platform. When it comes to Twitter, the famous rapper made it to the top five most-tweeted moments and celebrities of the night.

What made Eminem’s performance so impactful on social media was the fact that no one saw it coming. The Academy previously announced the musical performers at the ceremony, but he wasn’t one of them.

Eminem took the stage at the Oscars to perform his song “Lose Your Self” from the movie 8 Mile, which won the best original song award 18 years ago. The rapper wasn’t there to pick up the trophy, so his performance felt like a way to redeem himself, but many celebs attending the ceremony were confused by it, and their hilarious reactions were a part of the reason why Eminem started trending on social media.
