The 2023 European Film Awards nominations have finally been unveiled, with some worthy contenders leading the way. Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest are among the top contenders with nominations in five major categories.

Both Fallen Leaves and The Zone of Interest are in the running for the main award at this ceremony: best film. They’ll have to face tough competition in Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, and Matteo Garrone’s Me Captain to take the trophy home.

All of these five films are also in the running in the best European director field. The Zone of Interest, Fallen Leaves, Green Border, and Anatomy of a Fall also received nominations for their screenplays, while Me Captain lost its spot to the German drama The Teachers’ Lounge.

Fallen Leaves and The Zone of Interest are also in the running in the acting categories, thanks to the amazing performances of its stars Jussi Vatanen and Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves) and Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller (The Zone of Interest). Hüller also received a nod for her performance in Anatomy of a Fall.
