“The Favourite” Conquers the British Independent Film Awards

Olivia Colman in "The Favourite"

The Favourite really lived up to its name at this year’s British Independent Film Awards! Everyone expected it to be the front-runner at this ceremony, but this twisted period piece exceeded everyone’s expectations and ended up winning 10 shiny statues by the end of the night.

The Favourite received 13 nods at BIFA Awards and only ended up losing three of them. It proved its worth in all the major categories, including best picture, director and screenplay. Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz proved to be serious Oscar contenders after picking up acting honors in the respective categories.

The Favourite tells the story of frail Queen Anne and two women desperately fighting for her attention – her long-term confidante Sarah Churchill and young newcomer Abigail Hill. It premiered at Venice International Film Festival to rave reviews and won Grand Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup.
