The BFI London Film Festival has unveiled the list of the 10 films in the festival’s official competition and the list is dominated by female directors – 60% of the list is composed of movies directed or co-directed by women. The festival also sees the first transgender directed film Lingua Franca by Isabel Sandoval.
The nominated films are Thomas Clay’s Fanny Lye Deliver’d (starring Maxine Peake), Alma Har’el’s Honey Boy (starring Shia LaBeouf), Jayro Bustamante’s La Llorona, Isabel Sandoval’s Lingua Franca, Oliver Hermanus’ Moffie, Alejandro Landes’ Monos, Małgorzata Szumowska’s The Other Lamb, Haifaa Al Mansour’s The Perfect Candidate, Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s Rose Plays Julie and Rose Glass’ Saint Maud.
“Our Official Competition showcases the best in global filmmaking,” said Tricia Tuttle, BFI London Film Festival Director. “We have selected 11 directors in these ten films who invite viewers to probe and ponder, to be changed – either subconsciously or wildly and irrevocably – by their work.”
As established in last year festival by Tuttle the winning film will be revealed with a surprise screening at a public awards presentation, following the decision of the official jury members (yet to be announced).
The festival will take place from October 2 to October 13.
