Denis Villeneuve proved he’s capable of handling a big blockbuster with Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, but his biggest challenge is yet ahead of him. His Dune adaptation is coming our way this winter, and the first look is finally here.

Vanity Fair shared exclusive photos of the highly-anticipated adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic novel, which shows several of the film’s biggest stars – including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Oscar Isaac – in character.

Dune is expected to premiere on December 18th, and Villeneuve is hoping its date won’t be shifted. He’s proud of the work everyone put into this project and he’s looking forward to sharing it with the world. “Many of these people are like family to me, and they’re very much in my thoughts. I’m so proud to showcase their hard work. I look forward to a time when we can all get together again as Dune was made to be seen on the big screen,” the director told Vanity Fair.

Villeneuve also revealed he decided to split the original novel into two films, because its world is too complex, and he wouldn’t have agreed to work on it otherwise.
