If you’re always in the mood for a feel-good musical, Flora and Son is about to become your next obsession. Apple TV+ dropped the first trailer for John Carney’s latest film, which made waves at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

According to its official synopsis, this promising musical explores “the bond between a mother and son on a journey toward a new harmony.” It centers on a single mom Flora (Eve Hewson), who’s struggling to raise her rebellious teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan).

After being advised to find him a hobby, Flora decides to buy him a beat-up acoustic guitar and joins forces with a washed-up LA musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to help Max discover the transformative power of music. In addition to the leading trio, Jack Reynor, Sophie Vavasseur, and Kelly Thornton also star.

Flora and Son hails from the acclaimed Irish director John Carney, who gave us some of the best original musicals of the past two decades with Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street. The first film on the list even won an Oscar for the best original song, while the other two were nominated for multiple accolades.

Flora and Son had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and it will head to the Toronto Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release on September 22, before streaming on Apple TV+ one week later.
