It’s been exactly five years since Dear Evan Hansen premiered on Broadway, and this anniversary will be quite special. After a lot of anticipation, the movie version of this hit musical is soon coming to theaters, with Ben Platt returning to his Tony-winning role.

Dear Evan Hansen centers on a socially awkward teenager, who goes on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance following the suicide of a fellow classmate.

Platt admitted he had reservations about reprising the role in a different medium, but eventually agreed in the hope that Evan Hansen’s story will reach a bigger audience this way.

“Having an opportunity to share this story with, like, millions more people is ultimately much more important than my being worried that my performance won’t be as good as it was on stage,” the actor told NME.

Dear Evan Hansen originally premiered on Broadway in 2016 and ended up winning six Tony Awards. Its big-screen adaptation was directed by Stephen Chbosky and stars Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Nik Dodani, Julianne Moore, and Amy Adams. It’s set to premiere on September 24th.
