The adaptations of beloved musicals are having a moment in Hollywood, and Waitress is the next one in line. Bleecker Street shared the first trailer for Waitress: The Musical with Sara Bareilles reprising her lead role from the original Broadway musical that inspired it.

Waitress: The Musical centers on Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and expert pie maker, who tries to escape her loveless marriage and small-town life by applying for a baking contest in a nearby county, which allows her to reclaim a long-forgotten part of herself.

The official synopsis promises this film will celebrate “the power of friendship, dreams, the family we choose, and the beauty of a well-baked pie”, as we watch Jenna finally find the courage to take her long-abandoned dreams off the shelf.

Just like the Broadway musical that inspired it, this movie draws inspiration from the 2007 movie Waitress, starring Keri Russell. Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway adaptation and played the lead role, and she’ll reprise it in this big-screen adaptation alongside Drew Gehling, Charity Angél Dawson, Caitlin Houlahan, Christopher Fitzgerald, Joe Tippett, Eric Anderson, and Dakin Matthews.

Waitress: The Musical had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival back in June and it will be released in theatres on December 7.
