British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac has fired lead guitarist Lindsey Buckingham after a disagreement about the band’s upcoming tour.
Buckingham left the group in 1987 and took a decade out to focus on his solo work. He rejoined the group for the live album The Dance and has been touring with the Mac ever since.
The news was announced by former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette who tweeted earlier this week: “Breaking news: Lindsey Buckingham is out but I’m not in.” The tweet was deleted but his departure has since been confirmed.
On Monday, the band announced that Mike Campbell of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House will be the replacement guitarist.
After hearing the news, fans have responded negatively about the future absence of Buckingham.
“This is heartbreaking cause Lindsey Buckingham is genuinely irreplaceable. No one’s gonna be able to smash out “Big love” the way he does, or play beside Stevie during “Landslide” the way he does, or run around the stage like a 5-year-old the way HE DOES. It just won’t be the same”, one fan said.
“‘I’m sorry, but Fleetwood Mac are NEVER the same without Lindsey Buckingham. He is amazing and I’m really sad to hear that he is no longer with the band. Tells you something when they have to replace him with 2 guitarists!!”, tweeted another fan.
Will Fleetwood Mac ever be the same again?
