“Free Guy” Set to Score Top Box Office Spot With $26 Million, Ryan Reynolds Wants a Sequel

Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds is set to debut at the domestic box office with $26 million, making it the top spot.

According to Variety, the comedic action film took in around $10.5 million on Friday from 4,165 theaters and it’s expected to make another $13 million to $16 million throughout the weekend.

Free Guy is the first Disney film to have a theatrical-only release in about a year. The film will run only in theaters for 45 days.

In the film, Reynolds portrays a non-playable video game character named Guy in a popular game called Free Guy. When he realizes he’s living in a fictional game, Guy embarks on a quest to become the game’s hero with help from the game’s programmers played by Joe Keery and Jodie Comer. Lil Rel Howery, Taika Waititi, and Utkarsh Ambudkar also star in the film.

Don’t Breathe 2 is projected to come in No. 2, Respect starring Jennifer Hudson at No. 3, Jungle Cruise at No. 4, and The Suicide Squad at No. 5.

Reynolds tweeted on Saturday that a sequel was possible. “Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo! #irony.” 20th Century Studios retweeted Reynolds’ tweet and director Shawn Levy also retweeted it writing, “Yuuuuuuuup”.
