Since its premiere earlier this spring, Cruel Summer grew into Freeform’s most-watched show, and it was just a matter of time before it was renewed. The teen mystery series is officially coming back for its second season, but it’s still unclear in which form.

According to the series showrunner Tia Napolitano, everything is “totally up in the air” at this point, and it’s unclear if Cruel Summer will continue as an anthology series or keep telling the story of the same characters.

“You’re never guaranteed a Season 2.So we held hands and decided we have to make Season 1 be able to stand alone if that was all it was going to be. We had to answer all the questions and we did—well, I hope. So yeah, onwards!” Napolitano told Entertainment Weekly.

Cruel Summer premiered on Freeform back in April, and centered on two teenaged girls whose lives are turned upside down after one of them goes missing and the other one is accused of covering it up. Olivia Holt and Chiara Aurelia play the lead roles, while the rest of the cast includes Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Blake Lee, and Michael Landes.
