Alka Joshi’s The Henna Artist was one of the most talked-about books of 2020 and it was just a matter of time before a TV adaptation would be produced. That moment is finally here, and Freida Pinto is set to star and produce the TV series based on this beloved novel.

The Henna Artist takes place in the vibrant pink city of Jaipur during the 1950s and follows a 17-year-old girl named Lakshmi who tries to make a living as a henna artist after escaping an abusive marriage.

Freida Pinto described Joshi’s novel “a celebration of womanhood and feminism”, and said she’s looking forward to honoring the glory and beauty of India with this series. She also described Lakshmi as the kind of character she’s been dying to play for quite some time.

“As an actress, I cannot wait to dive back into the stories of my motherland and make my women (and my men) of all backgrounds, with all their good and their complexities, feel seen and heard,” said the Slumdog Millionaire star in a statement.

The Henna Artist is being developed by Miramax TV, and Michael Edelstein will produce the series alongside Pinto.
