HBO Max is currently working on a highly-anticipated prequel series Dune: The Sisterhood, but its production has been plagued with difficulties. The future of this project became even more uncertain after the director Johan Renck and Shirley Henderson announced their exit.

Renck and Henderson reportedly departed the project due to the creative changes, but the constant delays that impacted actors’ schedules reportedly played a role in the matter, as well. The production has been put on hold following their exit, especially after creator Diane Ademu-John stepped down as co-showrunner late last year.

HBO Max spokesperson confirmed the duo’s exit. According to their statement, Henderson will be recast in the role of Tula Harkonnen, while Johan Renck completed his work on the series and he’s moving on to pursue other projects.

“As Dune: The Sisterhood has entered a pre-scheduled hiatus, there are some creative changes being made to the production in an effort to create the best series possible and stay true to the source material,” reads HBO Max’s statement.

Dune: The Sisterhood serves as the prequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune, and it’s set 10,000 years before the original film. It follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they establish the fabled society known as the Bene Gesserit to combat forces that threaten the future of humankind.
