HBO is constantly coming up with new ideas to expand the Game of Thrones universe, and their next project inspired by the series will focus on the dark and bloody past of House Targaryen.

A prequel series titled House of the Dragon already received a 10-episode straight-to-series order with Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik serving as showrunners.

This show will be based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, which takes us centuries back before the events of the original series and tells the story of Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors.

HBO Programming President Casey Bloys announced the news during a recent WarnerMedia Day, and he’s putting his full trust in the creative team behind this project. “The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories. We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan, and George,” said Bloys.

This news comes shortly after HBO had reportedly decided to cancel another prequel series, starring Naomi Watts. This show was created by Jane Goldman and was supposed to explore everything “from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers.” HBO hasn’t confirmed the news.
