Gary Oldman recently won the Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the movie Darkest Hour. As it turns out, he was more into the role than any of us would think. During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor revealed that he proposed to his wife Gisele Schmidt while being dressed as Churchill.

“There was a break in the filming, and we had talked about it and I just felt the urge,” said Oldman to Jimmy Kimmel. “We were down in the war rooms, and I took her into the back room. And as Winston Churchill, I said ‘Will you marry me?'”

Schmidt said yes, but they couldn’t enjoy the moment for long since Oldman was asked to get back to the set and continue with the filming. You can check out this segment from Jimmy Kimmel Live! below.

The 59-year-old British actor and writer/art curator Gisele Schmidt tied the knot in August 2017 at a private ceremony. This is Oldman’s fifth marriage, while Schmidt was previously married for 20 years. Oldman said that the fifth time might be the charm adding: “I’ve gone through my thing and we’re like peas in a pod… I’m nearly 60 and at last, I think I’ve come home.”

Oldman received numerous appraisals for his portrayal of Churchill with critics calling it one of the best works in his career. Besides the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in Motion Picture Drama, Oldman received multiple other nods for the performance including BAFTAs and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for best actor. It is expected that he will also get nominated at the upcoming Academy Awards. Darkest Hour focuses on Winston Churchill’s early days in the office and, although it didn’t have a strong box-office run, it gained a widespread acclaim from the critics.
