The Game of Thrones prequel has a tough act to follow and George R. R. Martin knows it.

The original HBO series based on A Song of Ice and Fire boasts a worldwide fandom of millions of people and has earned 47 Emmy Awards.

Before the eighth and final season came to a conclusion, it was confirmed that several prequels were being considered, but that one created by Martin and Jane Goldman would be going ahead.

HBO has given the series the working title Blood Moon — despite Martin referring to it as The Long Night — and it will be set at least 8,000 years prior to the events covered in GOT.

In spite of the wide viewership the prequel will undoubtedly gain, the author doesn’t believe it will match that earned by GOT.

“The scale of Game of Thrones’s success has — reaching all over the world and invading the culture to [such an extent] — it’s not something anyone could ever anticipate, not something I expect to ever experience again,” Martin said on the podcast Maltin on Movies.

Even if Martin is right, we’ll definitely be watching!
