After the latest season of The Crown gave us a closer look at Princess Diana’s life, another project about the beloved royal is on the way. Kristen Stewart is set to play Lady Di in the upcoming biopic Spencer, and the first look proves she’s the perfect person for the role.
Directed by Pablo Larraín and based on the script by Steven Knight, Spencer takes place over three days in the early 90s. It’s set over the royal family’s Christmas holidays at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk when Princess Diana came to the conclusion that her marriage with Prince Charles is nearing its final moments.
In an official statement discussing her role in the project, the Charlie’s Angels actress described it as a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life.
“It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her,” stated Stewart.
In addition to Stewart, Spencer will also star Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris. The project is currently filming in Germany before resuming production in the UK.
