Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie has been in development for quite some time, and it’s finally starting to take shape. The leading lady of this exciting project recently confirmed that Greta Gerwig will be in charge of directing it.

The possibility of Gerwig’s involvement in this project was first reported all the way back in 2019, and Robbie finally made things official during her recent interview with British Vogue.

“[With Barbie] comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t,’” said Robbie.

According to Variety, Gerwig will co-write the script with her frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach. The production will kick off in early 2022, while the film itself is eyed for a 2023 release date. The creative duo previously co-wrote the movies Frances Ha and Mistress America, both starring Gerwig. She’s next set to appear in Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel White Noise.
