“Groundhog Day” Sequel in Works

Andie MacDowell and Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day"

If you’re a fan of the cult classic Groundhog Day, get ready for a special sequel.

Variety confirms that a Groundhog Day sequel is in development as a “virtual reality adventure game.” The VR game is being developed by Tequila Works in partnership with Sony Pictures Virtual Reality and MWM Immersive.

“We are not developing a new ‘Groundhog Day’ movie,” Jake Zim, senior vice president of the Sony Pictures VR group, told Variety. “This is us expanding the storyline into a new format. We’ve taken Groundhog Day and put it into a musical, now we’re putting it into an immersive experience.

Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son will drop players into a reoccurring day in the life of Phil Connors Jr., son of Phil Connors, played by Bill Murray in the original movie. In the film, Phil Connors is a weatherman who’s trapped in an endless loop as he relived the same day over and over again.

Groundhog Day is a real attempt to make a real game,” he added. Through hours of “hilarious puzzles and branching narrative gameplay,” the player’s goal is to break the loop.
