Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is one of the front-runners for the best-animated film at the Oscars and the visionary director is already plotting its follow-up. De Toro is partnering up with Netflix for an animated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel The Buried Giant.
The Buried Giant is set in a fictional post-Arthurian England, where no one is able to retain long-term memories. It centers on an elderly couple, Axl and Beatrice, who decide to travel to a neighboring village to seek out their long-lost son after dimly recalling he was once a part of their lives.
Del Toro is hot on the heels of the success of Pinocchio and the adaptation of Ishiguro’s novel seemed like a perfect chance to join forces with Netflix again.
“The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds. It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel,” said Del Toro in a statement.
In addition to directing The Buried Giant, Del Toro is also coming on board as the producer, and he’ll write the script along with Matilda the Musical scribe Dennis Kelly.
