Treat Williams, the prolific actor whose career in Hollywood spanned almost half a century, passed away at 71. The Golden Globe-nominated star of Everwood and Hair died in a tragic motorcycle crash, and his family asked for privacy during this difficult time.

Williams’ family released an official statement revealing he passed away in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident, and asked the public to respect their privacy as they deal with their grief.

“Treat was full of love for his family, for his life, and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him,” reads the family’s statement.

Williams’s rise to prominence started during the late 70s after he played George Berger in Miloš Forman’s adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Hair. He went on to star in over 100 movies and TV shows, including Prince of the City, Once Upon a Time in America, and The Late Shift. Williams experienced somewhat of a career renaissance after being cast as the lead in the drama series Everwood, which ran between 2002 and 2006. He’ll posthumously play the media tycoon Bill Paley in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology series Feud: Capote’s Women.
