HBO has given us two amazing seasons of Gentleman Jack so far and we won’t be getting any more. About a month after Season 2 concluded its run, the network announced that this critically acclaimed period drama won’t be coming back for another season.
Gentleman Jack is based on diaries by LGBTQ+ trailblazer, voracious learner, and cryptic diarist Anne Lister and chronicles her unconventional relationship with Ann Walker during the 19th century. They made history in 1834, after being wed in Britain’s first known lesbian wedding, even though their union was without legal recognition.
HBO released an official statement, saying they won’t be moving forward with the third season of Gentleman Jack, and thanked its creator Sally Wainwright and stars Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle for bringing this story to life.
“When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers,” reads the statement by HBO.
Gentleman Jack premiered in 2019, and HBO developed it in collaboration with BBC and Lookout Point. Its supporting cast included Joe Armstrong, Amelia Bullmore, Rosie Cavaliero, Gemma Jones, and Gemma Whelan.
