Despite its top-notch creative team and the star-studded cast, Avenue 5 didn’t manage to shoot for the stars. HBO canceled the sci-fi comedy led by Hugh Laurie after two seasons.

Avenue 5 premiered on HBO in 2020 and the action took place on a space cruise ship filled with spoiled, rich space tourists who struggle to keep their cool after their ship gets thrown off course into space.

The series was created by Armando Iannucci, who previously found huge success with HBO’s political satire Veep. In addition to Hugh Laurie, Avenue 5 also starred Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ethan Phillips.

HBO’s spokesperson confirmed the show’s cancelation in a statement that reads, “Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey. While we will not be moving forward with a third season of Avenue 5, we look forward to many more adventures together.”

The cancelation of Avenue 5 doesn’t come as a shocker since it’s been previously reported that the cast has been released after Season 2 and is free to look for other projects. Its official cancelation comes just a few days after Laurie was cast in the third season of the Apple TV+ drama Tehran.
