The movie Practical Magic was not the biggest hit of 1998 both with the audience and with the critics, but it did get some attention and garnered some followers. Now, HBO max is planning a new prequel TV series for the movie.

The streaming service is reportedly gathering some hit shows like The Big Bang Theory and Friends but is also making room for original programming. The prequel series will be named Rules of Magic and will have Melissa Rosenberg from Jessica Jones fame as a showrunner. Rosenberg was also a writer in the Twilight franchise.

The original movie was based on a book by Alice Hoffman. It was directed by Griffin Dunne and starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as two sisters who start using their family’s witchcraft to save themselves from the men around them. The series will take place in the 1960s and deal with the family of the two witches. Two of the characters, Franny and Jet, are the aunts of the witches from the original movie and have also appeared in it, played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest.
