Fans of the influential spy-thriller series Bourne rejoice! Almost 4 years after the last movie Jason Bourne it is now confirmed by CinemaBlend that a new addition to the series is in the making. It is still unclear whether Matt Damon will return to reprise his role as the titular hitman.
The first movie, The Bourne Identity, an adaptation of the Robert Ludlum novel became an international hit and skyrocketed Damon’s career. Its style of gritty quick action became influential on other series of the genre such as James Bond and Mission: Impossible. It was followed by two other films with Damon another film in 2012 with Jeremy Renner and another one with Damon in 2016.
This month a new TV series, Treadstone, is due to be released. It’s set in the same world in the years before Bourne’s involvement. The new movie which is now in development is supposed to tie into that series.
Ben Smith, producer of past Bourne films as well as the new TV series has confirmed this idea of a “Bourne universe.” “I mean we are definitely working on another film. What we’re doing within that? Will there be connected tissue in terms of are we all existing within the same world and universe? Absolutely. The details of that are still under wraps.”
