Sony Pictures gave us one of the most original and intriguing thrillers in recent memory with Searching, and they’re currently in the process of developing a sequel to this sleeper hit.

This critically acclaimed 2018 film, starring John Cho and Debra Messing, followed the story of a desperate father trying to find his missing daughter using the power of technology. Despite a familiar storyline, Searching managed to turn this concept on its head by using computer screens and smartphones as canvas.

This innovative movie premiered at Sundance Film Festival and won the critics over with its unique visual presentation and unpredictable storyline. It was also a huge financial hit and managed to earn $75 million on a $1 million budget.

The news initially led to confusion since fans of the original movie didn’t know what to expect from the sequel, but the director Aneesh Chaganty quickly cleared the air.

“Some clarity: the story will NOT follow the same characters or plotline as the original. We all see this second installment as a wonderful opportunity to tell another original tech-driven thriller. With all due respect to Taken, this is not Taken,” Chaganty wrote on Twitter.
