House of the Dragon premiered on HBO with a fiery blast and set several viewership milestones in its wake. The first episode of the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel attracted almost 10 million viewers, scoring the biggest HBO series premiere in history.

The first episode was watched by 9.986 million viewers on HBO and HBO Max platforms, drawing the largest audience in the TV channel’s history. This series is yet to reach the heights that Game of Thrones did with its final episode, which broke all HBO records with 19.3 million people tuning in to watch.

Casey Bloys, the chief content officer of HBO & HBO Max praised the show’s cast and crew for making this possible and said they’re looking forward to sharing the rest of the season with audiences.

“It was wonderful to see millions of Game of Thrones fans return with us to Westeros last night. House of the Dragon features an incredibly talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into the production, and we’re ecstatic with viewers’ positive response,” said Bloys in a statement.

House of the Dragon takes place two centuries before the events of the Game of Thrones, and it chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, as the war of succession rips this great dynasty apart. It premiered on HBO on August 21, with new episodes airing weekly.
