The second season of House of the Dragon is on the way, but it will be shorter than we expected. The next chapter of the hit HBO series will consist of eight episodes, as the masterminds behind it plot a possible Season 3 renewal.

According to Deadline, HBO was eying another 10-episode arc when they renewed House of the Dragon for Season 2, but there’s been a slight change of plans. The upcoming season will feature eight episodes, two less than the first, and an HBO spokesperson claims that the trim was “story-driven”.

This change was made as HBO mulls a green light for the show’s third season, which seems like a no-brainer given its success. Its pilot was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on its first day, scoring the biggest debut in HBO’s history.

House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, set nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones. It chronicles a war of succession known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, which led to the downfall of House Targaryen. George R. R. Martin previously said it will take four full seasons to do justice to his original novel.
