The Great is one of Hulu’s most acclaimed shows in recent memory, but its many accolades and positive reviews didn’t help it secure a Season 4 renewal. The streaming giant made a shocking decision to cancel this historical dramedy after three seasons.

The Great centers on the life of Catherine the Great, who ruled over Russia from 1762 to 1796 with an iron fist. She’s remembered as the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history, but this series reimagined her life from a humorous and satirical point of view and it’s been billed as “an occasionally true story.”

The Great was led by Elle Fanning in the role of Catherine the Great and Nicholas Hoult as her husband, Emperor Peter III of Russia. The supporting cast of this historical drama also included Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow.

Season 3 was released on Hulu back in May, and it’s quite a shocker to see the show canceled given its critical acclaim. Since its release in 2020, The Great received seven Emmy nominations, while the leading duo Fanning and Hoult were nominated for several other prestigious awards.
