Idris Elba in "Luther"

A few years after Luther ended its run, Idris Elba is ready to return to the role that put him on the map. The first look at the stand-alone movie Luther: The Fallen Sun is here and it sees our favorite detective John Luther embark on another adventure.

According to the film’s official synopsis, a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.

In addition to Elba, the film will also star Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, Jess Liaudin, and Dermot Crowley, reprising his role as Martin Schenk from the original series. The film will be released by Netflix in March 2023, but it still doesn’t have an official release date.

Luther was created by Neil Cross for BBC, and he’s set to return as the screenwriter of the stand-alone movie. The series premiered in 2010 to critical acclaim, and its supporting cast included Ruth Wilson, Steven Mackintosh, Indira Varma, Paul McGann, Warren Brown, and Dermot Crowley. During its run, Luther received 11 Emmy nominations, in addition to winning many more accolades for Elba’s performance.
