The big-screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical In the Heights was a long time coming, but we’ll have to wait for it a little bit longer. The premiere date of this highly-anticipated adaptation has been pushed by a year.
In the Heights was supposed to premiere on June 26th, but the studio decided to postpone its release in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. It’s now scheduled to premiere on June 18th, 2021 – almost a year after originally planned.
Director Jon M. Chu addressed the delay on Twitter and wrote that “In the Heights didn’t take 10 years to get made only to be left in half-empty theaters without the crowd it deserves” and thanked fans for their patience and faith.
In the Heights takes place in NYC’s predominantly Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights, and follows the adventures of a charming bodega owner who dreams of moving to the Dominican Republic. The film will star Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, and Olga Merediz.
