Insecure actress Issa Rae will be joining the cast of the sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse as Jessica Drew, known as Spider-Woman.

Rae will be joining voice actors Shameik Moore (as main hero Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfeld (as Gwen Stacy, a.k.a. Spider-Gwen).

Directing the film are Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be producing and writing the screenplay with David Callaham. Also producing are Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg. Original Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey is executive producing with Lord Miller’s Aditya Sood.

Plot details are still unknown, but casting Rae presents the possibility to explore Wundagore Mountain, which has been ignored in the Marvel feature and TV series adaptations over the last 20 years.

Rae gushed over her love for Spider-Man to Variety back in February saying, “Since the third grade, I’ve loved Spider-Man, comic books, memorabilia, everything.”

The actress is currently in production of the fifth and final season of Insecure. She’s currently serving as executive producer on Robin Thede’s A Black Lady Sketch Show and she’s working on the docuseries Seen & Heard. Rae also has the unscripted series Sweet Life and the hip hop comedy Rap Sh*t.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is scheduled to debit on October 7, 2022.
