Jay-Z usually comes across as a tough rap star, but his mom can still hit him in the feels.

The 47-year-old and his 3 siblings were raised by their single mother, Gloria Carter.

In a song on his latest album, 4:44, which was released last year, Jay-Z revealed that his mother is a lesbian.

Coming out to her son reportedly reduced the rapper to tears, and prompted him to write Smile which is based on one of Gloria’s poems.

The lyrics include the lines: “Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take.”

Jay-Z, who is now a father of 3 of his own kids, has told TV host David Letterman during his Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction that he had known about his mother’s sexual orientation for a long time, but that the pair had never discussed it until last June.

The Family Feud rapper admitted that he doesn’t even believe in crying when you are happy, but that “I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free.”

Now we’re tearing up.
