American Fiction made quite a splash when it won the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, and we finally know what to expect once it hits the theaters. The first trailer for this acclaimed satirical comedy is finally here, and it sees Jeffrey Wright portray a frustrated writer whose life gets even more difficult after he pens a surprise bestseller.
According to its official synopsis, American Fiction “confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes” through a story about “a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from ‘Black’ entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes.”
His life turns upside down when he decides to write a satirical book that embraces all the old tired tropes about the Black community under a pen name. The novel he wrote as a form of rebellion suddenly becomes a surprise hit and propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.
In addition to Wright in the lead role, American Fiction also stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Adam Brody, Leslie Uggams, and Erika Alexander. It hails from the first-time director Cord Jefferson, and it’s expected to hit the theaters on December 15 after having its world premiere at this year’s TIFF.
