Jenna Ortega became a household name thanks to the success of Wednesday, but she had to put another Netflix series on the back burner to star in this show. The young actress was supposed to return for the fourth season of You before Wednesday got in the way.

Ortega played Joe Goldberg’s teenage neighbor Ellie Alves in the second season of You. She was one of the rare characters to survive his killing spree, and she was briefly referenced in Season 3, but never made an actual appearance on the show.

Showrunner Sera Gamble revealed they were hoping to bring Ortega back in Season 4, which premiered on Netflix on February 9, but she couldn’t return due to a scheduling conflict.

“We wanted to bring Ellie back and we heard, ‘Oh, Jenna is doing some show.’ It’s been just such a pleasure to see Jenna this year. We have ideas for Ellie if her schedule allows her to visit us again,” Gamble told IndieWire.

There’s still hope Ortega could return in future seasons, and the young actress herself told Teen Vogue it would be amazing to see Elie come back and take control of her life. Missing Season 4, however, was the right call since Wednesday became the second-most watched English-language Netflix series and brought her a Golden Globe nomination.
